Storage of Figs

Dried figs can be stored in an unopened package for up to six months – similar to raisins or dried prunes.  Something to guard against in storing dried figs that have been opened is storage-type insects due to the sweet aroma and sugar content; therefore, it is good to put them in jars or plastic containers with tight fitting lids.  After being stored for a considerable period of time, the figs may get a white substance on the surface that is natural fruit sugar which has crystallized.  When dried figs are refrigerated, sugaring happens more quickly. For this reason, we don’t recommend freezing.   Sugaring can be dissolved by steaming, brief microwave exposure or rinsing under hot running water.
